• Balancing Environmental, Social and Economic Responsibilities

Sustainability is one of our shared corporate values and an integral part of how we do business every day. We believe that delivering on our sustainability commitments makes us a more globally competitive company that generates value for shareholders over the long term.

Resolute’s approach to sustainability has evolved over the past decade, encompassing more and more elements related to our operations, our processes and our products. Supported by the commitment of our employees, senior management and Board of Directors, the company has measurably improved performance in such areas as health and safety, environment, energy and forest management.

Our sustainability strategy, based on a balanced approach to environmental, social and economic performance, is designed to enhance our competitive position by focusing on:

    • improving resource efficiency, which helps control fiber, fuel and power costs
    • moving beyond regulatory compliance and environmental incident management to differentiate the company as an environmental supplier of choice
    • positioning Resolute as a competitive employer
    • building solid relations in our operating communities

We build on our accomplishments of today by aspiring to be a more efficient and competitive company, a better employer, a stronger business partner, and even more deeply engaged in the communities in which we live and work.

    Sharing Our Performance

As a company managing the natural resources in our care, we recognize that our operations have a direct and material impact on the environment, biodiversity, economy and social fabric of the communities in which we operate. At the same time, sustainability trends at both the macro and micro levels are rapidly impacting the business landscape. The assessment of sustainability trends – in terms of both related risks and opportunities – on our business today and in the future plays an important role in Resolute’s focus on sustainability and continuous improvement.

The following table lists the principal macro-level sustainability trends, considered to be material to our business, and their related impacts. Each issue is linked to at least one of our sustainability strategy’s areas of primary focus.

Placing increasing importance on sustainable practices and disclosure of sustainability performance is in line with our values and the expectations of the markets we serve. Since 2008, Resolute has tracked and reported on a range of environmental, economic and social performance indicators, which are posted online for public review in the Publications section of our website. We have continued to raise the bar on our sustainability efforts and related reporting transparency and, since 2010, we have prepared reports in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines for sustainability reporting.

The GRI guidelines are some of the world's most broadly accepted standards for comprehensive sustainability reporting, providing a robust framework to support clear reporting processes, linking the indicators we measure to shared priority issues identified by stakeholders, and targeting our outputs to address the concerns and interests of all interested parties, as well as our strategic partners.

GRI compliance is a rigorous process that drives the company to continuously improve the accountability and transparency of our approach to sustainability, which includes developing robust internal data collection and reporting processes.

Some visitors to our site may find it useful to use the GRI Index to find management disclosures and data on specific indicators.

The sustainability section of our website includes all data that would be contained in a complete sustainability report prepared in accordance with the GRI Standards. A significant portion of this information is also included on our new Resolute Highlights microsite.
